The overall winner of the Marathon was Morgan Elliot, 23, of Black Mountain, with a time of 2 hours, 49 minutes, 3 seconds, at a 6:28-mile pace. So, race director Jay Curwen turned snow into snowcones and made the race one giant marathon with some 400 runners.ĭisappointing for many of the runners who traveled from across the country, and even local runners who trained for many months to beat themselves up and test their mettle over 40 rugged miles. This stretch of the parkway north of Asheville has been closed for months due to heavy snow and ice on the road. The only road entry to Mount Mitchell is through the state park entrance, which sits at Milepost 355 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This was the first time in the epic race’s history that runners were not allowed to reach the summit, either by road or trail. The conditions on top of the mountain were too dangerous, according to the National Park Service, to allow runners and support staff on to the summit. The 19th annual race, which typically includes a 40-mile trail run from downtown Black Mountain to the summit of Mount Mitchell (6,684 feet elevation) and back to Lake Tomahawk, along with a 26.2-mile marathon, was cut short this year.
